Desert 330kV Transmission Line – Sand & Salt Alkali Corrosion Protection

Background

A 330kV overhead transmission line in an inland desert area was exposed to strong wind sand, high salt alkali soil and large day-night temperature difference for a long time. The original protective layer of the conductor fell off, and the steel core was corroded by salt alkali moisture. After 5 years of operation, the conductor had obvious strand wear and hidden dangers of strength reduction, which threatened the safe operation of the power grid.

Solution

A special anti-corrosion grease with excellent sand resistance, high adhesion and salt alkali resistance was selected. The construction technology included conductor surface deashing and drying, full filling of inter-strand gaps, and uniform coating of the outer layer. The grease formed a closed protective film to isolate wind sand, salt alkali and moisture, and had good high and low temperature stability.

Effects

After 4 years of continuous operation tracking, the conductor corrosion was completely inhibited, the wear between strands was reduced by more than 85%, the conductor mechanical strength remained stable, and the maintenance cycle was extended from 1 year to 4 years. It effectively solved the composite corrosion problem of desert wind sand and salt alkali, and reduced the operation and maintenance cost significantly.
